Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday has set a new scale for enterprise vulnerability management. The company released fixes for 966 security flaws, including 105 rated critical and two Windows vulnerabilities that attackers had already exploited before patches became available.
Two exploited paths to SYSTEM privileges
The most urgent fixes address CVE-2026-81963 in the Windows Update Stack and CVE-2026-85880 in Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call. Both are local elevation-of-privilege vulnerabilities capable of helping an attacker obtain SYSTEM-level control after gaining an initial foothold.
This distinction matters. These flaws do not necessarily provide the first point of entry, but they can turn a limited compromise into complete device control. Attackers commonly combine phishing, stolen credentials or browser vulnerabilities with privilege escalation to disable defenses, extract secrets and move deeper into a network.
The wider release also includes hundreds of remote-code-execution, information-disclosure and elevation-of-privilege fixes. Administrators therefore face more than a routine update cycle. They must identify which vulnerabilities are relevant to their environment while ensuring that the unusually large collection of changes does not disrupt critical applications.
What IT teams should do
- Prioritize the two actively exploited vulnerabilities and internet-facing systems.
- Use accelerated testing rings for workstations, administrative devices and high-value servers.
- Review endpoint telemetry for unexplained privilege changes before assuming patching has removed the risk.
- Confirm that recovery procedures, application rollback plans and recent backups are operational.
- Track failed installations and devices excluded from normal update policies.
A growing prioritization problem
Microsoft's expanded use of AI-assisted vulnerability discovery may be contributing to the rising number of identified flaws. That is positive for software assurance, but it also increases pressure on organizations that still manage patches through spreadsheets, fixed monthly windows and broad severity scores.
In my view, the headline number is less important than the operational lesson. Security teams cannot treat every one of 966 vulnerabilities equally, yet they also cannot postpone an entire update because testing appears overwhelming. Exploitation evidence, asset exposure, business importance and available mitigations must drive the deployment order. Organizations with mature inventories and staged automation will cope far better than those still deciding what they own after the patches arrive.
