Hidden Web Instructions Turn AI Browsers Against Their Own Users

Researchers demonstrated zero-click indirect prompt-injection techniques affecting ChatGPT Atlas and Claude in Chrome. Malicious instructions placed in emails or social-media content could manipulate an AI browser operating across authenticated sessions, potentially exposing messages, cloud files and online accounts.

Research into ChatGPT Atlas and Claude in Chrome has exposed a difficult security problem at the center of agentic browsing. When an AI assistant can read untrusted content and act across authenticated websites, hidden instructions on one service may influence actions performed on another.

When Content Becomes a Command

The attacks use indirect prompt injection, where malicious instructions are embedded in material that the user asks the assistant to process. The victim does not have to intentionally execute a suspicious prompt. Routine activities, such as summarizing email or interacting with a social-media post, can bring the concealed instructions into the agent's working context.

Researchers demonstrated that a planted comment on X could redirect ChatGPT Atlas from a benign task into actions involving other logged-in services. Test scenarios included accessing WhatsApp contacts, distributing phishing messages and manipulating an Amazon shopping session.

A separate attack chain used hidden structures in an email read by Claude in Chrome. When asked to summarize recent messages, the assistant could interpret the embedded content as operational instructions. The demonstrated impact included reading Gmail data, sharing Google Drive files and assisting with account takeover attempts involving verification messages.

A Browser Boundary Problem

Traditional browsers apply origin boundaries so that one website cannot freely control another. Agentic browsers intentionally operate across multiple sites because completing user requests is their purpose. This creates a powerful cross-domain execution layer that conventional web-security assumptions were not designed to handle.

In my view, prompt filtering alone will not solve this problem. Attackers can hide intent in text, markup, remote resources and multi-step instructions. The safer approach is to limit what an agent may do after reading untrusted content.

Controls Enterprises Should Demand

  • Separate content-reading sessions from action-enabled sessions.
  • Require explicit confirmation before sending messages, sharing files or changing account settings.
  • Block access to passwords, verification codes and authentication workflows.
  • Maintain detailed logs showing which content influenced each action.
  • Use isolated browser profiles for agentic tools and sensitive business applications.

AI browsers promise major productivity gains, but convenience should not silently erase security boundaries built over decades. An assistant that can act as the user must be governed like a privileged identity, not treated as a passive browser feature.
