Critical cPanel Flaw Let Hosting Customers Cross Into Database Root

cPanel has corrected a critical privilege-escalation vulnerability that could allow an authenticated hosting customer to execute SQL with database root privileges. The security release also addresses request smuggling and Exim weaknesses that create additional risks for shared hosting environments.

A critical cPanel vulnerability has exposed a dangerous boundary failure inside one of the web hosting industry's most widely used administration platforms. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-58048, could allow a customer with a valid cPanel account and access to MySQL or MariaDB features to execute database commands in the root administrative context.

Why Shared Hosting Raises the Stakes

Hosting control panels are expected to isolate customers even when many accounts share the same physical or virtual server. Each customer should be able to manage only their own websites, databases, files, and email services. CVE-2026-58048 undermined that model by allowing database operations to cross the intended privilege boundary.

The issue appears in the database-renaming process. When cPanel creates a replacement database, moves data, rebuilds grants, and removes the original database, it may fail to preserve the correct SQL mode. Under affected conditions, SQL can consequently run with database root authority rather than the limited permissions assigned to the hosting customer.

That level of access could permit an attacker to inspect or modify databases belonging to other applications. Depending on the database engine and operating system configuration, cPanel warns that the impact may extend to compromise of the underlying server.

Required Defensive Actions

Administrators should update cPanel and WHM immediately to a corrected build supported by their release branch. WP Squared installations also require the corresponding patched version. Where an immediate update is impossible, administrators can temporarily remove the MySQL feature from customer accounts. Existing databases will continue operating, but customers will be unable to create or delete databases until access is restored.

The same security release addresses an HTTP request-smuggling flaw in the cPanel service and unsafe Exim behavior under certain configurations. Administrators should therefore verify the exact installed build rather than assuming that correcting one vulnerability resolves every issue covered by the release.

  • Audit recently renamed databases and administrative SQL activity.
  • Review customer accounts for unexplained privilege changes.
  • Check web and service logs for suspicious requests on cPanel management ports.
  • Limit control-panel access using firewalls, VPNs, or trusted management networks.

I believe shared hosting providers should treat this as more than a routine patch. A valid customer account is not necessarily a trusted identity because accounts can be stolen, purchased fraudulently, or created specifically for abuse. Strong tenant isolation must remain effective even when an attacker already controls an ordinary hosting account.
